in the year 1968 the curator seth
siegelaub invited seven artists (carl andre, robert barry,
douglas huebler, joseph kosuth, sol lewitt, robert morris and
lawrence weiner) to participate in a project that soon
became well known as “the xerox book”.
siegelaub’s idea was to transfer the physical space of an
exhibition onto the pages of a book. he asked the seven artists
to contribute 25 pages of art work produced with the help of a
xerox machine.
“the copy book” copies
siegelaub’s idea: again seven artists were invited to
participate in an art show in the form of a 100-copy book
edition. this time each artist was asked to contribute a work
consisting of 10 pages produced with a photocopy machine. since
the idea was not only to use the photocopy method as a means of
reproducing the work, but to make it an inherent aspect of the
artwork itself, every artist was asked to submit his or her
contribution of 10 pages a hundred times, that is, for the
entire 100-copy edition.
